Did I make the 100 "Living Legends" list? Hey sorry about not saying goodbye after graduation - my parents looked half dead and my girlfriend face was redder than her hair so we needed to get out of there. Congrats again and we should get together for lunch now that we are alums!

First off, this is one of those non-stories that became a story. The media and Republicans can't find any real dirt on Obama, so they resort to stupid non-issues like this. What upsets me the most, though, is that I agree with what both Rev. Wright and this pastor said. The truth is the truth, even if politicians want to deny it. I have just become so upset at all of these candidates, and wish John Edwards hadn't dropped out as early as he did now. He would be stealing the show right now if he was still running, I bet.

Whitney, I totally agree with you in that it's time to focus on real news. Lately, everything is blown way out of proportion and frankly it gets a bit annoying to hear about things that in the great scheme of things, probably won't really add up to much, if anything. Stories like this just make me shake my head in sadness for the field of journalism. Is this type of story really the kind we want to spend our whole careers chasing? Honestly?

Hi, Whitney!

After reading your post, I had to go back and re-read the question: "Should political/news bloggers have a code of ethics?"

What's implicit, to me, in the question is that any code of ethics would be voluntary, just like they are with SPJ or PRSA. What I'm reading here is an argument against mandatory codes of ethics, which I think even the proponents of developing a code would object to. Who would develop the code? How would it be enforced? Not possible.

The evidence for an ethical blogspace is Jimmy Wales, talking about Wikipedia. For this argument to work, you need to show us how wikipedia and the blogspace are alike.

Kendra -- I liked how you questioned the credibility and conflicting issues of blogs. In this weeks reading from Dispatches From Blogistan, Stefanac talks about how hyperlinks are the links to truth and that bloggers should have links in each of their posts so people can see where they got their information. This is a way to make blogs more credible, although I think some other ways should also be developed. To make money, businesses and organizations should create their own blogs and hire employees to maintain those blogs. So instead of looking at other people for information, they can take out the middlemen and do that on their own.

To answer your money question, I feel that sites such as Ohmynews save money since if the issuing is pressing enough, people are just going to post to get their opinion out there - money isn't a driving force. So newspapers who get their information from this site are getting people's thoughts and what information they bring to the table for free. But I am sure they do pay a few people to monitor the site. Advertising is probably a large moneymaker, and maybe the political parties will give the site money to cover events.
